Desperate for God

by Gene Easley

“If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say; 2 If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us: 3 Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us: 4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul: 5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.  6 Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.  7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.  8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth" (Psalm 124:1-8).

The central theme of the Bible is humanity’s need for God and for the salvation that He has provided.  “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6).  We need a Savior.

Some say we need more self-esteem to be successful.  Others suggest that if one could only discover the formula to get rich, life would be full.  The truth is it is God that we need, and we need Him desperately.  We need God more than we need our daily provision and more than we need man’s approval.  We need Him so much that we must stay full of His Spirit.  We need Him to the extent that we should be praying without ceasing.

We need God when we wake up in the morning.  We need Him when we go to work or to school or to do our daily chores.  If we lose our sense of desperation for Him, we have joined the ranks of those who are slipping away.

We need God so much that we must daily read and study His Word.  We must hear His voice.  We will lose our way except He speak to us.  We need Him so much that we must spend special times in prayer each day that we might stay close to Him.

If any thing could be said about a large percentage of our churches in America today, it is that most of their members don’t realize how much they need God.  We have learned how to be at ease in Zion while the enemy is making great headway in this warfare for the souls of men and women.

May God send to the church a revival of seeking after Him!  Not seeking new methods and new programs but just simply wanting to get closer to God.  We need Him as we have never needed Him before!

"As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.  My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?" (Psalm 42:1-2).
