It Is Finished

by Gene Easley

The demons of hell began to rejoice.  Satan was having a heyday.  The keys of death, hell and the grave rattled in his hand.  He thought he was conqueror.  But suddenly Jesus cried out the words, “It is finished.”

His blood fell to the ground, and a power hereto not known began to be released.  The earth shook; the sky darkened; and all creation from that time and forever must take note of that moment in history.  The Old Testament looked forward to it; the New Testament looked back.  All Scripture points to that elevated moment of time--the Cross.

As His blood began to fall, it meant that the hearts of millions would be allowed to rejoice.  Hopeless, helpless, drifting humanity suddenly began to hear the heartbeat of God, beckoning them to a new life of deliverance and victory.

A million songs could be sung for each drop of blood that fell.  The world could not produce enough choirs to sing the praises that should be sung.

"Victory, victory, blessed, blood-bought victory."  We express it the best we can.  But really our hearts are feeling more.  So another writer attempts to express it a different way.

"There is power, power, wonder-working power."  But all has not been said for still another song emerges from another heart cleansed by His blood.

"The blood will never lose its power, no never, no never."  But that isn't the end either.  Everyday around the world--in all the nations--new melodies, new words of music are flowing from the hearts of those who have been washed by the blood.  Thank God for Calvary!

Matthew tells us that an earthquake came when the last of His blood was shed and His spirit departed.  Could it be that the demons of hell shook the earth while scattering to hide in the lowest parts of the pit as they saw the blood and the Christ coming to set the captives free?  He wasn’t coming in defeat but He was coming as Victor?

What caused this world to tremble when Jesus died on the Cross?  Could it be that the inhabitants of Paradise shouted as the price for their freedom so longed for was finally paid?  Could it be their rejoicings shook God's footstool as their Victor descended to the lower parts of the earth to lead captivity captive?

Or could it be that the angels were having such a glorious time when the price for sin was paid that their rejoicing shook this earth?  Were they having such a tremendous camp meeting that it spilled over onto this little planet, and the earth just couldn't help but be moved?

Perhaps it was something else.  Could it be that the earth felt the vibrations of the heart of God?  His love had been allowed to be released as never before.  Did the throbbing of the heart of a God, who is love, shake the foundations of the earth and open up graves and set prisoners free?

Or maybe it was the compounding of all of these events that so moved the earth.  What a day on earth's calendar was the day of the old rugged Cross!

Other explanations should be considered which seem to be the Scriptural reasons for the shaking on that day.  Was not the earthquake simply a symbol of the great wrath of God toward sin and a display of His eternal wrath against those who persist in sin?  Did not the earth tremble as a witness to man of how dreadful a deed it is to crucify the Son of God?  Was not it also a prophetic symbol of the future judgments coming upon the earth for all who still crucify the Blessed Savior?

One thing is sure.  There is coming a day when everything that can be shaken will be shaken.  Thank God people are still being moved by Calvary!  Thank God that on Calvary’s Cross Jesus cried, “It is finished,” and the price for our salvation was paid in full!  We now have a Rock to stand upon that shall never be shaken!  That Rock is Christ!

"Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.  (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?  He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things)" (Ephesians 4:8-10).
