There Is a River

by Gene Easley

“There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High” (Psalm 46:4).

In Scripture, water is often used to represent the Spirit of God.  One characteristic of water is that it is known to take the path of least resistance.  That means that any obstacle in the way can hinder the free flowing of the water (or Spirit).  Many churches are so full of pride that the Spirit can’t flow.  The Spirit can not move through those who resist Him. The members who belong to those assemblies can sit there while the years roll by, and they still won’t see any move of the Spirit until someone humbles himself or herself before God.  The River of Life simply will not flow where pride dominates.

One of the last blessings mentioned in the New Testament refers to the thirsty soul.   Rev. 22:17, “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come.  And let him that heareth say, Come.  And let him that is athirst come.  And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.”  The promise isn’t to some certain denomination or movement but to whoever is thirsty.  Life is restored to any individual or church group that dares to allow His Spirit to flow.  In Revelation 22:1, John speaks of a “pure river of water of life.”  Though it is a river in that eternal city, we don’t have to wait until eternity to drink of that water.  It is being offered to us now.

I was in a campmeeting service a few years ago where the blessings of God were so great they were beyond description.  During the Thursday night service the Spirit fell on the congregation in a way I have seldom experienced.  Heaven so flooded our souls that I felt a deep transforming work taking place in my heart, as I know many others were experiencing the same in their lives.  I literally felt I had entered into another world.  It was a world where the fleshly desires had no place and a spiritual realm where the soul was totally satisfied in Christ.  I realize that many Christians have not yet experienced the River of Life to that extent, but I have been there and can testify to its power.  The power of the Spirit of God is a transforming power, a life changing power.  Everybody needs a dip in that River.

The flesh will take you through the dirty waters of this life that only bring torment, shame, and disappointment.  But there is a River that gives life.  Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).

Ezekiel spoke of a river flowing from the temple of God that would bring life to everything it touched.  “Every thing shall live whither the river cometh” (Ezekiel 47:9).  The River revives everything it touches, and what is not touched by that River has no chance of survival.  My prayer is, “God flow through us one more time.  Let Your touch change us forevermore.  Deliver us from the rivers of destruction, and place our hearts and lives in the River of life.”

There is a River.  Some may deny it.  Some church people may even prefer the dry barren lands void of His presence.  But there is a River.  Those who are thirsty can be satisfied.  May God take us to that River!
